Pest Control and Termite Inspections in Ipswich

Ipswich is known for its streets of older timber homes, and timber is what termites eat. I'm Jon, owner and sole technician at Deadset Pest Management, and my pest control Ipswich work centres on termite inspections under and around those older homes, plus rodent control and fire ant treatment. You deal with me from start to finish, with a fixed quote before any work.

Local pest problems in Ipswich

Ipswich was the "cradle of coal mining in Queensland", with mining starting at Woodend in 1848, and its historic houses run from colonial and Victorian styles through to the Queensland bungalow. A lot of those timber homes are still standing and still lived in.

Termites in timber stumps and subfloors

A Queenslander sits up on stumps, with timber bearers, joists and floorboards above the ground. That's a lot of exposed timber. Over the years, original timber stumps may have been replaced with concrete or steel, but not always, and not always all of them. Termites can build mud tubes up a stump, across a bearer and into the floor, and in a dark subfloor that can go unnoticed for a long time.

The space under the house matters too. Stored timber, old furniture, garden supplies and lattice touching the soil all give termites cover. Built-in areas downstairs, where the underneath has been enclosed to make extra rooms, can hide the stumps and bearers completely.

Flooding and damp ground

Ipswich sits on the Bremer River and has been through major floods, including 1974 and 2011. Homes in low-lying streets can hold damp under the house for long periods, and damp soil and timber suit termites. Floodwater also spreads fire ants, which can raft on the water and set up in new places once it goes down.

Fire ants in the region

Ipswich has lived with fire ants for years, and the whole city sits in a biosecurity zone. Ipswich First, the council's news site, reported about 250 nests found along a road reserve in Redbank Plains. That's why there are restrictions on moving soil, mulch, turf and similar materials around the region.

Pest control services I offer in Ipswich

  • Termite treatment in Ipswich homes where I've confirmed live termites. I'll show you what I found and explain the treatment options with a fixed quote.
  • Rat control in Ipswich roof spaces, wall cavities and under-house areas. My rodent control service finds how they're getting in before setting up control.
  • Fire ant control for house blocks and larger properties. Nests you suspect are fire ants should also be reported to Biosecurity Queensland's program (how to report, or 13 22 68).
  • General pest control covering the usual household pests, with my 12-month service warranty on internal treatments.
  • Commercial kitchens and body corporates, plus vacate treatments that Ipswich property managers can book.

Termite inspections in Ipswich

For a termite inspection in Ipswich on an older house, the subfloor gets as much attention as the rooms upstairs. I check stumps, bearers and joists, ant caps, the underside of floorboards, and anything stored under the house. Then it's the roof void where access is safe, the interior, and outside around fences, sheds, decks, trees and stumps in the yard.

I use a Termatrac iTracker as part of the inspection. The radar finds termites moving inside walls, ceilings and roof spaces, and I never have to cut a hole to use it.

An old timber home on stumps is about as high risk as housing gets, and AS 3660 asks for inspections at least yearly, more often for homes like that. My termite inspections page explains the process in more detail, or ring me on 0412 205 586.

If you're buying an older Ipswich home, I can do a standard termite inspection. I don't provide pre-purchase timber pest reports, so if your lender or solicitor needs one, book that with a building and pest inspection company.

Suburbs and streets I cover

I service Ipswich and its adjoining suburbs, including North Ipswich, East Ipswich, Booval, Bundamba, Silkstone, Raceview, Brassall, Goodna and Redbank Plains, along with the newer growth areas around Springfield and Ripley.

The Logan Motorway makes Ipswich a straightforward run from my base. The older inner suburbs and the master-planned estates at Springfield and Ripley have very different pest issues. Older suburbs lean towards termites in timber, while the newer estates see more fire ants and ground-dwelling pests stirred up by earthworks.

Typical jobs in Ipswich

A termite inspection on a Queenslander

A common call in Ipswich is a termite inspection on an older timber Queenslander up on stumps, often for an owner who has never had one done. Most of my time goes into the subfloor, and the VJ walls upstairs get a Termatrac scan instead of a screwdriver.

Rats living under a high-set house

Another typical job is rats nesting among the boxes and old timber under a high-set house. I close off how they reach the floor above and set bait stations along the paths they travel.

Ask me what I'd expect in a home like yours when you ring.

We recently had Jon out to do a termite inspection and pest control. The cost was slightly more than we have paid for others but after having him out we think it was well worth it. We were impressed with his services and booked him to do a termite protection barrier. He was on time for both services and we found him to be both friendly and professional. We had a small problem with a pipe after the termite protection but Jon was out within half an hour and sorted the whole issue out for us. Would highly recommend using Deadset and we will be using them again.

Ipswich pest control questions

Are old Queenslanders in Ipswich more at risk of termites?

They have more exposed timber than most modern homes, especially in the stumps and subfloor, so the risk is higher if the house isn't inspected regularly. Good subfloor ventilation, intact ant caps and nothing stored against the stumps all help.

I've found mud tubes on a stump under my house. What should I do?

Don't break them open or spray them. Disturbing the termites can make them move and harder to treat. Call me, and I'll inspect to find out if they're live and how far the activity goes.

Does termite treatment in Ipswich mean drilling into my floors?

Not always. The treatment depends on the house, where the termites are and how they're getting in. I'll explain what's involved for your home before you agree to anything.

Can floods bring termites or fire ants to my property?

Fire ants can raft on floodwater and settle in new areas. After a flood, damp subfloors and soil also make conditions better for termites. It's worth booking an inspection once the house has dried out.

How do I get rid of rats under an Ipswich house?

Start by clearing stored items and food sources from under the house. I'll find the entry points and nesting areas, then set up rat control suited to the property and any pets you have.

How much does pest control in Ipswich cost?

It depends on the size and age of the home, the pest, how far it's spread and how easy the subfloor and roof are to access. You'll get a fixed quote from me before any work starts.
